Manchester United signed English defender Harry Maguire to a new contract, the Red Devils announced Tuesday.
The one-year deal will keep Maguire under contract through June 2027 and includes an option for another year. Maguire was set to hit free agency at the end of this season.
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honor,” Maguire said in a news release. “It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day.
“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.”
Maguire joined the Red Devils in 2019. He made 266 appearances for the Premier League club. The 33-year-old previously spent time with Leicester City, Hull City and Sheffield United. He also made 65 appearances for the England national team.
“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United,” Red Devils director of football Jason Wilcox said. “He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.
“Harry, like everyone at the club, is completely determined to help Manchester United to achieve regular and sustained success.”
The Red Devils (15-6-10) sit in third place in the Premier League standings, six points behind second-place Manchester City (18-5-7) and 15 points behind first-place Arsenal (21-3-7).
“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad,” Maguire said. “The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”
The Red Devils will host Leeds at 3 p.m. EDT Monday in Manchester, England.
